Zora Neale Hurston: Vanessa Bell Calloway
Note: A near perfect capture of this charming one-woman show at Pasadena Playhouse. Vanessa embodies the unsung literary hero with a performance full of spirit, humor, inspiration, and heartbreak. A fantastic capture overall, with just a couple quick dropouts in the first ten minutes. There is no obstruction, no washout, the video is steady, and the sound is excellent. It’s filmed with mostly close-ups and mediums, with an occasional wide shot to capture the pictures on screen. It’s filmed in 16:9 and includes curtain call and playbill scans. The show is 81 minutes on one disc with no intermission.

Note: Nice capture of the Trevor Nunn production before it came to Broadway. I prefer this Desiree over Catherine Zeta-Jones's. Filmed from the orchestra, though with a clear view and few obstructions.

A great video of the recently opened Vienna production of Mary Poppins. The show, which uses the US tour staging here (fold-out house, "Playing the Game"), is as charming as ever and the production is an excellent one. The adult leads are all fantastic - the standout for me being David Boyd, who is one of the best Berts I've seen - and the children are adorably precocious and interact very well with Annemieke and David. The video is shot from the circle with no obstructions and an excellent view of the stage. It follows the action very well and captures both the big numbers and the more intimate moments in the best way possible. Missing the second half of "Let's Go Fly a Kite".

Oona is a darker, more brooding Matilda and it works well. The first act is nearly perfect and unobstructed, second act’s escapologist scene (~3 minutes) is audio only and there is some slight head obstruction at times during the second act.

There are a few heads at the bottom of the screen, but they are easily worked around so they rarely affect the action. There are some quick dropouts in each act, and Telly is audio only while the house lights are on, but there are no other major blackouts. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call, encore, and playbill scans.

An excellent capture of Tori as Matilda. She’s a very impressive young actress, and has her own fresh take on the role. The rest of the cast is solid as well; I believe this is the first capture of Alison Luff, and she steps into the show beautifully.
This is very nicely captured with no washout, no major blackouts, and very little obstruction. A railing blocks the very front left corner of the stage, but only the actors’ legs are unseen. Telly is audio only; the video for act two begins when the house lights go down and Lavender takes the stage. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Corey Cott (Jack Kelly), Ben Fankhauser (Davey), Liana Hunt (Katherine), Andy Richardson (Crutchie), Luca Padovan (Les), Julie Reiber (Medda), John Dossett (Joseph Pulitzer)
Note: First two minutes is out of focus and missing a few seconds. It’s mostly well shot, but there’s some shakiness/wandering during applause and a small blackout after Seize the Day. Nice closeups and wide-shots for the choreography. The cast is just superb. Rather sad that this show is closing in August. Includes curtain call. Filmed two months before Newsies closed

Newsies - August 23, 2014 - Broadway
Jack Kelly: Corey Cott, Katherine Plummer: Liana Hunt, Davey: Ben Fankhauser, Crutchie: Andy Richardson, Joseph Pulitzer: John Dossett, Medda Larkin: Capathia Jenkins This was the second to last performance on Broadway and the last performance open to the public. The energy from the cast and audience is palpable. There are entrance applauses for everyone, as well as for some of the greatest lines in the show, and a standing ovation for Seize the Day before the first act was even over. Definitely a must-see for any fan of the show. Act one has a few issues, but act two is much better. There is a one-minute blackout during Santa Fe (prologue). Carrying the Banner and the following scene in Newsie Square alternate between being blacked out or severely obstructed by a railing. There is a six-minute blackout from about halfway through The World Will Know through the scene at Jacobi’s Deli. Act two only has a two-minute blackout for the first scene, and a one-minute blackout during King of New York. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.

Spotlight washout, no visible faces, some head blocking and a bar blocks some of the action. Letters from the Refuge is very blurry and out of focus. However this is the first footage of the tour and a lot of the dancing is very visible. Audio from this performance available as well. The action is followed very well, using a combination of closeups and wider shots as necessary. Masters Notes- The first few minutes are blacked out for Leave while the house lights are on, but it picks up toward the end of the song and the show is perfectly captured from there with no blackouts, or obstruction. There is a bit of washout in a couple wideshots in act two, but nothing major. As usual, it’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups, and the sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.A+

Leading Player: Sasha Allen, Pippin: Matthew James Thomas, Charles: John Rubinstein, Berthe: Andrea Martin, Catherine: Kristine Reese, Fastrada: Sabrina Harper, Lewis: Callan Bergmann, Theo: Lucas Schultz
Note: The first capture of the new US Tour. Sasha is a very sassy Leading Player with great vocals, and Matthew’s performance feels fresh and new after his Broadway run. The audience has a lot of energy, and it made for great performances all around, especially during the interactive bits like No Time at All.
This is a perfect capture no blackouts, no obstruction, and only a bit of washout in the wide shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. A+

A perfect capture of this Sondheim classic at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley. A really nicely staged production with great sets and costumes and fantastic talent. David and Tory and wonderful, and the supporting cast is solid as well. This has no blackouts and no washout; there is some slight obstruction when the actors come into the audience, but no obstruction when they are on stage. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.

Daniel Beaty
Note: A near perfect capture of this fascinating one-man show at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. The show tells the life story of Paul Robeson: born the son of a slave, he put himself through law school and then rose to fame as an actor, singer, and civil rights activist. Daniel Beaty gives an engrossing performance, portraying not only Robeson, but also every other character in his life including his father, brother, wife, teachers, reporters, and many more, giving each character it’s own unique voice, personality, and mannerisms.
A great capture overall with just a one minute blackout in each act. There is no washout, no obstruction, and the video is very steady. It’s filmed in 16:9 in mostly mediums and close-ups with the occasional wide shot to show the projections on the back wall. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - September 6, 2012 - West End
Luke Treadway (Christopher), Nicola Walker (Judy), Paul Ritter (Ed), Una Stubbs (Mrs. Alexander), Niamh Cusack (Siobhan).
This play won 7 2013 Olivier Awards including Best Play, the play follows a 15 year old math genius who tries to unravel the mystery of his neighbor's murdered dog that was found speared by a fork, this play is both a murder mystery and a tale of personal discovery for somebody on the edges of society. The video quality is quite fuzzy for a pro-shot though.

Mark Margolis, Liz Wisan, Lou Liberatore, Joseph J Parks, Randy Danson, Jordan Geiger, Tyrone Mitchell Henderson, Anthony Fusco, Deirdre Lovejoy, Tina Chilip, Robynn Rodriguez) A great capture of this play during it’s run at Berkeley Rep. The show is hysterical, heart-breaking, and thought-provoking all at once. The cast is wonderful, taking on these complex characters creating a great family dynamic. The show is very nicely captured with no washout or obstruction, and the video is steady. The first minute or so of act two is blacked out, but there are no other dropouts. The sound is excellent as usual. It’s filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. The show is three acts with two intermissionson

The Lightning Thief - August 20, 2014 Off-Broadway
Percy Jackson: Eric Meyers, Grover: Jordan Stanley, Annabeth: Kristin Stokes, Mr Brunner/Chiron/Poseidon/Hades: Graham Stevens, Sally/Clarisse/Thalia/Mrs Dodds: Zakiya Young, Luke/Ares/Mr D/Charon/Gabe: Parker Drown A great capture of this fun and energetic show during it’s Off-Broadway run. The sets/props are minimal but inventive, and the music is very catchy. The cast is very fun to watch -- they do a great job of switching between characters and supporting each other. A very nice capture overall. There is a railing that can occasionally be seen at the bottom of the screen, but it never blocks more than the actors’ feet. The video occasionally wanders just a little, and there are a couple quick dropouts, but no major blackouts. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. The show is 60 minutes with no intermission. Includes playbill scans. A

Tshidi Manye (Rafiki) Tryphena Wade (Sarabi) Drew Hirshfield (Zazu) Vusi Sondiyazi (U/S Mufasa) Micheal Hollick (U/S Scar) Thembelihle Cele (U/S Nala). Very Nice Capture, with a little bit of blockout every now and again. The First 5 to 8 mins are shaky due to needing to adjust to seat and hide camera while filming. However through out it is a pretty good video. The Cast was great, an amazing preference. The video is only Full Act 1 and runs until about 35 mins of act 2. My camera battery died.

Note: A near perfect capture, shot fairly close to the stage so the picture is extra clear and steady with no washout whatsoever. There are a couple heads that can be seen at the bottom of the screen occasionally, but they never block the action. There are a couple very quick dropouts in the first three minutes. The sound is excellent. It’s filmed in 16:9 with mostly mediums and close-ups, and a few wides here and there. Includes curtain call.

Note: A very interesting show that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The cast did a very good job of putting on this show. I was very impressed. The Video is pretty good, a bit jumpy the first 5 or so minutes gettig adjusted and late comers. However besides that it is fine. Also there is a bar that obstructs the end of the set but it usually filmed around.

Mark Blum (Vanya), Kristine Nielsen (Sonia), Christine Ebersole (Masha), David Hull (Spike), Shalita Grant (Cassandra), Liesel Allen Yeager (Nina) Near perfect capture of the L.A. production of this great play, one quick drop out in Act I but the video is perfect other than this with no washout or obstruction, there's a high pitched squeal from an audience member's hearing device that can be heard a couple of times but it's short lived and the dialogue can be heard clearly over it.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike – June 7, 2014 The Old Globe
Vanya: Martin Moran, Sonia: Marcia DeBonis, Masha: Candy Buckley, Spike: Tyler Lansing Weaks, Cassandra: Hanefah Wood, Nina: Allison Layman A very nice capture of The Old Globe’s production. The cast is fantastic, and they play off each other very well. It’s great to see new faces in each role, and a fresh take on each character. I particularly loved Marcia’s Sonia. The show has no washout, no obstruction, and very steady filming. There is a two minute blackout before/during Nina’s entrance, but the show is otherwise fully captured. As usual, it’s filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups, and the sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans.
